MUMBAI: The president and CEO of
Intel Corporation, Craig R. Barrett stressed the fact that their
core business in India is still computers, while they are also
expanding into the Internet and e-business as well as hosting
facilities like data farms.
Mr Barrett said the company will be
strengthening its education initiative for creating an awareness of
the value of computer technology based education. The company has
begun working with the NCERT and the Education Department for
creating a national Website for training teachers.
Mr Barrett, who addressed a crowded
press conference, was gung-ho about the future of Intel and claimed
that the company was well placed to take on the competition. ``Three
new microprocessor products will be out by the end of the year will
put us in a competitive position relative to AMD, the other
microprocessor producer,'' said Mr Barrett, referring humorously to
claims made by rivals.
The three products mentioned were
`Itanium,' which is a 64-bit processor, a new 32 bit chip and an
entry-level processor code-named `Timna.'
``Nobody has asked me about
Microsoft,'' said Mr Barrett, and then went on to state, ``I have no
opinion on Microsoft.''
Answering queries from the press,
Mr Barrett said that they had no plans yet on making India a
manufacturing base and said that any place is a potential site as
the company relied on its strong infrastructure.
Personal computers will not be
pushed out of the market by hand-held devices, said Mr Barrett, and
added that the growth of hand-held devices which access the Internet
will be in addition to personal computers.
The press conference was held to
highlight the joint venture between Intel Corporation and DotEx
International, which a joint venture of Nse.it and i-flex Solutions.
